In this series of classes we will take the fear out of free-motion quilting, and teach you how to quilt wall hangings and smaller quilts (but if you want to tackle a large bed quilt later, you can!)

The course consists of 3 classes, so you can join in at the stage you feel comfortable at. Special offer if you book for a complete course (all 7 classes) - get a Creative Grids Rulerwork template for free.

Dates for 2024

Class 1. Getting Started
Tuesday Afternoons; 14 & 21 May; 2 - 4:30
Wednesday Evenings; 31 July & 14 August 6 - 8:30
Tuesday Afternoons; 22 & 29 October 2 - 4:30

Getting Started is an introduction to FMQ and teaches you the basics, including marking techniques, and simple designs. We will discuss thread and its role in your quilting. We will provide you with a pre-marked quilt sandwich, which you will quilt on your own machine. All you need to bring is some good quality thread , or purchase in store, and your sewing machine in good working order, with a quilting foot. You will need to know how to drop your feed dogs, and change the settings to free motion, If you do not have a Brother machine, please bring your manual.

Class consists of 2 sessions of 2.5 hours each

Class 2. Matching Quilting to Patchwork
Tuesday Afternoons; 28 May & 4 June 2 - 4:30
Wednesday Evenings; 4 & 18 September 6 - 8:30
Tuesday Afternoons; 5 & 12 November 2 - 4:30

Matching Quilting to your Patching explores the  design process. You will piece a simple (small) 9 patch quilt piece at home, and in class we will plan and stitch this, using the skills you have learned  already. We will provide the instructions for the piecing, bring this to class along with a practise sandwich, and your machine. We will discuss straight line quilting using a walking foot, and take a sneak peek at quilting rulers and their uses.

Class consists of 2 sessions of 2.5 hours each

Class 3. Ruler work
Tuesday Afternoons;11 & 18 & 25 June; 2 - 4:30
Wednesday Evenings; 23 & 30 October 13 November 6 - 8:30
Tuesday Afternoons; 19 & 26 November 3 December; 2 - 4:30

Once you are confident with FMQ, the next step is ruler work, and this opens up a whole new world! There are a lot of rulers out there, we will be using Creative Grids rulers by Angela Walters (available in store). For this class you will need a ruler foot. Talk to us about your machine, we have Brother feet for both high or low shank machines, these may fit other brands, or you may need to talk to your machine dealer. (don’t leave this to the last minute, they may need to order one for you).

We will be quilting a simple table runner (we will provide the pattern so you have this made and bring to the class). The first lesson will be practise, so bring a practise sandwich, and your machine in good working order.

Class consists of 3 sessions of 2.5 hours each
